Sapiens: en kort historik över mänskligheten (hebreisk originaltitel: קיצור תולדות האנושות, engelsk originaltitel: Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind) är en bok av den israeliska författaren Yuval Harari som publicerades på hebreiska i Israel 2011, engelska 2014 och svenska 2015.

Humanism is a belief that Homo sapiens has a unique and sacred nature, which is fundamentally different from the nature of all other animals and of all other phenomena. Humanists believe that the unique nature of Homo sapiens is the most important thing in the world, and it determines the meaning of everything that happens in the universe. Harari thinks that 70,000 years ago, a random genetic mutation then enabled Sapiens to suddenly evolve new cognitive capacities. He calls this the Cognitive Revolution. Harari notes that animals in nature can only respond to physical phenomena, but Sapiens learned how to make up fictional ideas and believe in things that aren’t actually in Sapiens grew out of an undergraduate lecture series on world history at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where Harari still teaches, before becoming a bestseller in Israel in 2011.

Harari focuses on several key turning points in human history, including the Cognitive Revolution (70,000 years ago) when a random genetic mutation enabled humanity’s ancestors (Homo sapiens) to imagine and believe things that aren’t true, which, Harari argues, had a profound effect on humanity’s ability to cooperate in large groups.
